Hearing of suppression order application by the defendant

On 17 March 2026, the matter was listed to hear an application by the legal representatives of Naveed Akram (the defendant) for orders to suppress and restrict publication of the names of the defendant’s immediate family members, as well as their home, work and school addresses.

The Court heard oral submissions from the legal representatives for the defendant and media in relation to that application.

The Court will decide whether to make final orders in relation to the suppression and non-publication of that information on 2 April 2026. The Court extended the interim orders made on 9 March 2026 until the judgment on the final orders is delivered on 2 April 2026.

Brief service mention - 8 April 2026

The matter returns to the Court on 8 April 2026. On that date:

  • the CDPP will update the Court as to the status of the brief of evidence; and
  • further orders relating to the suppression of the identities of victims can be sought by the CDPP or any other party.

The CDPP’s Witness Assistance Service will liaise with the victims in relation to these orders in advance of 8 April 2026.
